ABOUT OUR

RESIDENTS
One of the ways we support our local artists is providing affordable low cost studio space allowing them to focus on their craft and grow creatively.
Karen Starrett is a painter, curator, and teaching artist. She lives at the Jersey Shore and her studio is located at the Jersey Shore Arts Center, Ocean Grove, NJ. Starrett has a B.A. from Douglass College at Rutgers University and an alumnus of School of Visual Arts.
In her paintings, Starrett seeks a connection between invisible feeling and external imagery. She has said, “For a painting to be successful there has to be a synthesis of color, form, and inner vision.” Starrett’s color palette and images are not planned. They evolve through the process of working on the painting into something that has personal meaning and identifiable imagery.
Karen Starrett’s work has been in solo and two-person exhibitions at Johnson and Johnson Headquarters, Ocean County College, Brodsky Gallery Chauncey Conference Center, Pier Village Art Gallery, and Mattison Gallery. Her paintings have also appeared in group exhibitions in the NY Metropolitan area including the Monmouth Museum, Penn State University, and El Barrio’s Art Space PS109. During COVID-19, her paintings have been seen in New York City’s Jason McCoy Gallery and SHRINE online exhibitions. Karen Starrett received an award for painting from The Monmouth County Arts Council and a grant from The Puffin Foundation. Her work has also appeared in literary and medical journals.
